A tribute to HIBISCUS inspired BEVERAGES
Hibiscus drinks originated in North and West Africa, where dried hibiscus calyces were brewed into vibrant,
tart infusions valued for refreshment, healing, and community.
In North Africa, especially Egypt and Sudan, Karkadé became a ceremonial and everyday drink — cooling the body while anchoring social rituals,reflecting the spirit of Sankofa: the act of reaching back to honor and carry forward ancestral knowledge.
As the beverage moved across the continent to West Africa it took on new identities known as Bissap, Zobo or Sobolo.
Through the forced migration of African peoples across the Atlantic, hibiscus traveled to the Caribbean and South America,
carried in memory, practice, and seed.
In new lands, the drink transformed while retaining its essence—becoming more more pronounced with spices and known as
Sorrel in the Caribbean, or Agua de Jamaica in parts of South America.
These evolutions embody the concept of Asé Wà—the living power of creation and transformation;
where African heritage adapts, survives, and thrives.
Together, the journey of hibiscus drinks tells a story of remembrance and vitality:
looking back to move forward, and turning tradition into enduring cultural expression.
